Key Learning Areas

English

English develops students' knowledge, skills and understanding of English language and literature.

The teaching of English as a learning area  incorporates three strands:

*Talking and Listening

*Reading

*Writing

 

Students are encouraged to develop their written and spoken English for three main purposes:

    * to interact with others

    * to create and interpret texts

    * and to develop understandings about the world and ourselves.

 

Competence in English will enable students to: learn about themselves, their own and other cultures, to communicate their thoughts and feelings, to participate in society, to make informed decisions about personal and social issues, to analyse information and viewpoints and to use their imagination.

 

 

Mathematics

The teaching of Mathematics as a learning area incorporates the following strands:

*Number

*Patterns and Algebra

*Data

*Measurement

*Space and Geometry

*Working Mathematically

 

Mathematics  aims to:

    * create favourable attitudes towards mathematics and stimulate students' interest in mathematics.

    * develop in students a sound understanding of mathematical concepts, processes and strategies and the capacity to use these in solving problems.

    * develop in students the ability to recognise the mathematics in everyday situations.

    * develop in students the ability to apply their mathematics to analyse situations and solve real-life problems.

    * develop in students appropriate language for the effective communication of mathematical ideas and experiences.

    * develop in students an appreciation of the applications to mathematics of technology, including calculators and computers.

    * encourage students to use mathematics creatively in expressing new ideas and discoveries and to recognise the mathematical elements in other creative pursuits.

    * challenge students to achieve at a level of accuracy and excellence appropriate to their particular stage of development.

 

 

Science and Technology

Science and Technology is where students learn about the natural and man made environments by investigating, by designing and by using technology.

Students learn that Science is not just a body of knowledge but also a process of investigation.

 

 

Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)

In HSIE, students learn about the people in Australia and other parts of the world; and the social and physical environments in which they live.

 

They also develop particular skills in:

    * acquiring information;

    * using an enquiry process;

    * and in social and civic participation.

 

Students are also encouraged to develop positive values and attitudes about themselves, others, the world that they live in and their future.

 

Personal Development, Health, Physical Education (PDHPE)

In Personal Development, Health, Physical Education students learn to understand, value and lead healthy, active and fulfilling lifestyles. They learn about:

    * active lifestyle

    * dance

    * games and sports

    * growth and development

    * gymnastics

    * interpersonal relationships

    * personal health choices

    * safe living

 

Creative and Practical Arts

Creative Arts  addresses the artforms of Visual Arts, Music, Drama and Dance.

In Visual Arts students develop knowledge, skills and understanding in making artworks. They investigate different subject matter such as people, objects and places; use a variety of expressive forms such as painting, drawing and sculpture; and learn to consider the audience of their art work.

 

In Music students develop knowledge, skills and understanding in playing and performing music. By singing, playing and moving, they learn music of different styles and from different times and cultures.

 

In Drama students develop knowledge, skills and understanding in making drama. Students work collaboratively, taking on roles and creating imagined situations.

In Dance, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of dance.
