Our school

Athelstane Public School is situated in a very established community close to Sydney International Airport. The school is nestled in amongst well established trees and the grounds are attractive and well maintained. The school is a positive learning environment for 320 students, which includes students in four specialised support classes. The school draws from a multicultural community. A significant number of unit blocks have been developed at the Wolli Creek end of the school’s drawing area.

The school is staffed by highly committed and dedicated teachers who look to foster in students a love of learning and sense of wonder and curiosity of the world around them. To provide the students with the skills for life, there is a focus on developing students who are literate and numerate. There has been a focus over the last few years on developing the skill base of teachers so that they can more effectively teach the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of reading. The school has been involved in the Federal Government’s initiatives, National Partnerships on Literacy and Numeracy.

In addition to providing quality teaching and learning programs the school has focussed heavily in recent years on the well being of students. The school has implemented a number of initiatives to develop within students a greater acceptance and responsibility for their own behaviour.
The school has an active learning support team and students who are not maximising their potential are referred to the team. As a result of the proactive measures undertaken by the team, in consultation with parents, students are provided with the assistance they require to work to the best of their ability.

The school has embraced its partnership with Sydney University, Compass; heading into higher education. The program looks to encourage students to aspire to attain higher educational qualifications than previously considered.
